Springtown Water Authority Receives Significant Grant for Improvements to Current System
On January 21st, 2026 the Springtown Water Authority (STA) was awarded a grant in the amount of $419,665 by the State of Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. This grant will be used for the “Community Emergency Water Supply and Water Distribution Project.” This grant is for 85% of the projected cost with the balance ($74,059) as STA’s matching contribution.
The project has multiple objectives which include:
- The project will provide additional capacity of an existing water source for both fire protection and emergency household needs for potable water.
- Due to the pie shape configuration of our Township, which borders both Lehigh and Northampton Counties as well as five other Bucks County municipalities, we depend on mutual agreements and support from multiple volunteer fire companies. These companies, collectively have all shared a concern for water source availability in the event of a major fire. The improvements to the system will alleviate this concern.
- During periods of power outages, the residents in these areas are often without a source of potable water for an extended period due to most households relying on on-site wells. This project will provide a source of safe drinking water through a potable water fill station that will be open to not only residents of Springfield Township, but all residents of these surrounding communities thereby providing all with safe potable water for their homes.
- In addition to the installation of potable water supply fill stations, the project includes additional fire hydrants, emergency power generation, improvements to the existing Springtown system to increase water flow and looping of the water mains within Springtown.
Most of this work will be centered at the existing Well No. 2 location adjacent to the Palisades Regional Fire and Rescue facility off Route 212/412 in the Village of Springtown. Currently, this well is rated by the Bucks County Planning Commission with a Safe Yield of 1.858 million gallons per day, the highest in the Upper Bucks County Region. Well No. 2 currently only serves as back-up for the spring fed water system of Springtown.
This project was developed with the joint efforts of STA and Springfield Township with an emphasis on Emergency Preparedness. We thank the support received from PA Senator Coleman and PA Representative Staats in obtaining this Grant award. The project will be completed in 2026.
Please be advised that this project is not an expansion of the Springtown water system.
